What is WordPress website design?

the short answer

WordPress is the software behind a large share of the world’s websites. It lets you edit pages and publish posts yourself through a dashboard. WordPress website design means planning, designing and building a site on it: the theme, the pages, the forms and the plugins. Done well, it’s a solid, editable site. Done badly, it’s slow and needs constant updates. There’s also a newer option many people haven’t heard of: modern sites built without WordPress at all, which I explain below.

the problem

Most slow WordPress sites aren’t WordPress’s fault.

They’re built on a heavy theme, then loaded with plugins for every small job, then never updated. The site gets slower, a plugin breaks something, and the business owner concludes “websites are just like this.” They aren’t.

what I do about it

Lean WordPress, or no WordPress at all.

If you need to edit the site often, I build WordPress the lean way: a light setup, only the plugins it needs, and a structure built around inquiries. If you don’t, I’ll show you a modern build that’s faster and needs almost no upkeep, and let you choose.

WordPress vs. a modern custom website

Most people searching for WordPress design don’t know there’s another option. Here’s how the two compare for a typical B2B or service business:

WordPress vs. a modern build
WordPressModern custom build
Editing pages yourselfEasy, through a dashboardUsually done by your developer
Speed on a phoneGood if built lean; slow if overloadedFast by default
UpdatesWordPress, theme and plugins, regularlyVery little
SecurityDepends on keeping everything updatedVery little to attack
Best forTeams that publish or edit oftenBusinesses that want speed and low upkeep

Neither is right for everyone. If your marketing team publishes every week, WordPress makes sense. If the site changes a few times a year, a modern build is usually faster, safer and cheaper to keep running.

How I build WordPress sites that stay fast

  • A light theme, not a do-everything theme with a hundred demos
  • Only the plugins the site needs, each one for a reason
  • Images sized and compressed before they’re uploaded
  • A page structure planned around how buyers decide
  • Forms and booking that work on a phone
  • SEO foundations: titles, headings, schema and a sitemap

Rule of thumb: every plugin is a small promise to keep updating something forever. Make fewer promises.

WordPress web design in Cape Town

I’m based in Cape Town, so if you’re searching for a WordPress web designer here, we share a city as well as a time zone. The process is the same as anywhere else in the country, run on video calls. If you’re still deciding between WordPress and a custom site, see website design in Cape Town.

What WordPress website design costs

Every site I build is a fixed fee, scoped to what you need, with the price agreed before any work starts. What moves it: how many pages, whether the copy needs writing, and tools like booking or quote forms.

Remember the running costs too. A WordPress site needs hosting and regular updates. Ask any designer, me included, who looks after that after launch and what it costs.

Already on WordPress and it’s slow?

You have three options: clean up the existing site, rebuild it on WordPress the lean way, or move to a modern build. On the first call I’ll look at your site and tell you which one I’d pick, and why. Sometimes the answer is “fix four things and keep it.”

How to choose a WordPress web designer

  1. Ask which theme and which plugins they’ll use, and why each one.
  2. Ask who updates WordPress and the plugins after launch.
  3. Ask how fast the finished site will load on a phone.
  4. Ask what the site is meant to achieve, and how you’ll measure it.
  5. Get the fixed price and timeline in writing.

If the plugin list is longer than the page list, ask again.

Want to know which of this your site actually needs? Book 30 minutes and I’ll tell you what I’d fix first.

Questions

Do you build WordPress websites?

Yes. I build lean WordPress sites for businesses whose team needs to edit them often, and modern custom builds where speed and low upkeep matter more.

Is WordPress good for SEO?

It can be. Rankings depend on speed, structure and content, not the platform. A lean WordPress site ranks fine; an overloaded one struggles.

How much does a WordPress website cost in South Africa?

With me it’s a fixed fee scoped to your pages, copy and tools, agreed before work starts. Budget for hosting and updates as well.

Can you speed up my existing WordPress site?

Often, yes. On the first call I’ll tell you whether to clean it up, rebuild it lean, or move to a modern build.

Can I edit a modern custom site myself?

Not as easily as WordPress. Changes usually go through your developer, which is why I recommend WordPress if your team publishes often.
